Event description:
This is the fifth thesis dedicated to the municipality of Valledolmo, confirming a structured and ongoing research-action process developed in synergy with the local community and the Administration led by Mayor Angelo Conti.
The thesis focuses on the enhancement and repurposing of the Stagnone, a large above-ground water cistern built in the second half of the 18th century. The imposing stone building, characterized by cross vaults and an original capacity of approximately 1,300 cubic meters of water, represents one of the town’s most significant historical buildings. Recently restored internally, the Stagnone is now used to host conferences, exhibitions, and cultural events.
The redevelopment project proposes a coordinated set of interventions that include the demolition of internal and external additions, the reconfiguration of the main façade in local stone, the redesign of the entrances and openings, and the installation of a vertical access system with stairs and an elevator to the roof. The latter is transformed into a panoramic lookout, thanks in part to the temporary addition of a lightweight pavilion for bars and services, positioned on a mobile platform and opening onto the town and the Fiumara Valley.
Special attention is paid to the design of the public space in front of the Stagnone, which extends across the entire urban block. The new Piazza dell’Acqua redefines a strategic centrality in the historic center of Valledolmo, addressing the current difference in elevation and transforming a residual asphalt area into a recognizable, accessible, and distinctive civic space. The thesis demonstrates how physical and morphological challenges can become design opportunities, proposing a replicable method for other urban regeneration projects.
Through this work, INSULAE SRL renews its commitment to applied design research in smaller towns, supporting regeneration processes that enhance historical heritage, local resources, and the community dimension. The thesis contributes to amplifying the virtuous action of Valledolmo which, also thanks to the resources of the PNRR, is configured as a driving force within the broader territorial plan of the Sicilian Transversal.
